Questions about Dental Bonding

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is a composite resin used to restore decayed teeth, make cosmetic improvements and change the color of or reshaping your teeth. Bonding can lighten stains, close gaps and correct crooked teeth. A thin coating of a plastic material is applied to the front surface of your teeth. Then a bonding material is applied and sculpted, colored and shaped for a pleasing result. A high intensity light then hardens the plastic, and the surface is polished.

Why should a patient choose dental bonding?

As long as the original teeth are in relatively good health, dental bonding is an excellent means of improving the appearance of a smile and helping patients overcome minor defects like cracks, chips, broken teeth and gaps and to reshape and recolor your teeth.

Will dental bonding hurt?

Dental bonding may create some slight discomfort during the preparation of the tooth, but this soon dissipates to leave only a beautiful smile. Dr. Bartley understands your anxiety.  He has experience treating all kinds of patients, including children as young as two and welcomes Alzheimer’s patients and patients with mental and physical challenges.  Patients with dental anxiety can take an oral sedative or use nitrous oxide to have the procedure performed comfortably.

How long does the procedure take?

Normally, the bonding process can be completed in one or two visits. Dr. Bartley can estimate the time frame during your consultation.

Do bonded teeth require special care?

Simply follow Dr. Bartley's recommendations, including using a gentle toothpaste and practicing good oral hygiene. Prevent staining and similar problems by avoiding:

  • Drinking coffee or tea
  • Using any toothpaste not recommended by Dr. Bartley
  • Chewing on pencils, fingernails, or other foreign objects
  • Poor brushing and flossing habits

How long will the bonding last?

Although not as strong as porcelain veneers or crowns, the procedure should last 3-10 years as long as you practice good oral hygiene.
