What is a bridge?

A dental bridge is a false tooth affixed between two existing teeth with porcelain crowns. The fixed bridge is not removable, and improves dental health, your ability to chew, your ability to speak, and your general appearance.

Who is a good candidate for a bridge?

Anyone who has good dental hygiene and missing teeth is a good candidate for a bridge.  However, an initial consultation with Dr. Jeff Bartley will help determine what needs to be done to create the bridge specifically to suit your needs.

Do I really need a bridge?

Some people choose to ignore the replacement of their missing teeth. But, this is an unwise decision that can result in:

  • Remaining teeth start to shift
  • Other teeth becoming more susceptible to decay
  • Gum disease
  • An aging appearance

What is the procedure for a dental bridge?

To make a bridge designed especially for you, Dr. Bartley will:

  1. Prepare the surrounding teeth to be able to support the bridge
  2. Take an impression of the teeth and gums
  3. Send the impression to a laboratory where the bridge will be custom-crafted
  4. Put in a temporary bridge while the other is being constructed
  5. Fit the bridge and cement it in place

Will people be able to tell I have a bridge?

Dr. Bartley will match the color of the false teeth to your natural ones.  Once the specially made bridge is fixed into place, it will look like your other teeth.  Plus, your speech will likely improve, so the previous lack of teeth will be less noticeable.

How long will my bridge last?

With proper care and good oral hygiene, most bridges will last at least 10 years, perhaps longer.  With regular checkups, Dr. Bartley will stay ahead of any potential problems that may arise over the years, such as tooth decay.

What are the disadvantages of having a bridge?

With proper care and cleaning, there should be no problem with your bridge. Some people discover their teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold in the area of the bridge. Also, infections and decay can develop if acid-forming bacteria are not effectively removed from your teeth, which is why brushing and flossing are so important.

If you are missing one or more teeth, don’t wait for further problems to develop.  Please contact us today to schedule your consultation with Dr. Bartley. Dr. Bartley serves cosmetic dentistry patients in Anchor Point and the Kenai Peninsula areas of Alaska.
