Dental Crowns
Anchor Point, serving Homer and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
A dental crown, also called a "cap", is placed over your natural tooth to restore shape, size, and strength and to improve the tooth’s appearance. When cemented into place, the crown fully covers the entire part of the tooth above the gum line.
A dental crown may be a good solution to:
- Protect a tooth that has weakened, perhaps from tooth decay, from breaking further
- Hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- Restore a broken or severely worn tooth
- Support and protect a tooth with a large filling
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Cover a tooth that is misshaped or severely discolored
- Cover a dental implant
Types of Crowns
Dental crowns can be metal, resin, ceramic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Ceramic crowns are desirable for their tooth-colored appearance, and are as durable as porcelain-fused-to-metal. They are a great choice for highly visible front teeth. Metal lasts longest, rarely chips or breaks, and can withstand the biting forces of back teeth. But the metallic color is not always desirable. Resin is a less costly material, but wears down more quickly and may fracture more easily. Porcelain-fused-to-metal can be color matched to adjacent teeth for a virtually undetectable appearance. However, the porcelain may chip or break, and the underlying metal may eventually show through at the gum line, particularly as we age and our gums begin to recede.
Replacing Your Crowns
While you should expect to replace your crowns every ten to fifteen years, some patients ask about replacing old crowns because they want to switch from metal to porcelain, or they are having difficulties with wear, decay, or poor fit. Dr. Bartley can examine your crowns and explain the best solution for you.
