Digital X-Ray

Avoiding the dentist because you can’t tolerate having x-rays taken? The process has recently become far more pleasant, thanks to advances in dental technology and digital x-rays.

About 25 % of American dentists currently have digital x-ray technology. Many dentists, like Jeff Bartley, DDS, are installing digital X-ray equipment in an effort to eliminate the biggest complaints patients have about x-rays: biting down on those sharp squares of film and waiting for the film to be developed.

How Digital X-Rays Are Different

Digital x-rays allow a technician to glide a tiny sensor over the areas inside your mouth, and instantly the images appear on a computer screen. Although the digital images look similar to traditional X-rays, they can be enlarged and manipulated as necessary, helping dentists get a better idea of what’s going on and helping you to gain a deeper appreciation of the reasons for the procedure Dr. Bartley is recommending.

Advantages of Digital X-Rays

There are a number of advantages to digital x-rays:

  • The same x-ray machine produces the image, potentially reducing radiation
  • Since the image is digital, there is no more need for developing chemicals and no concern about processing errors
  • The image can be manipulated, enhanced or enlarged for better viewing by both doctor and patient. That tiny speck signifying a cavity can be pretty hard to see, but with digital x-rays, enlargement makes these flaws obvious
  • Storage, retrieval, comparison, manipulation, enhancement and e-mailed radiographs are far easier
  • The film is of a far better quality of image

Advanced Technology for the Best Dental Care

Digital x-rays also fit well into Dr. Bartley’s advanced technology, paperless office, because the digital images can be stored on computers and emailed as necessary to insurance companies and other healthcare providers. The new digital technology combines with Dr. Bartley’s existing software for scheduling, billing and insurance, allowing Dr. Bartley to swiftly provide x-rays to other dental professionals for traveling patients or when filing electronic insurance claims.
