Questions about Endodontics

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that deals specifically with the inner tooth.  The root canal is a common endodontic procedure, but endodontics treats other conditions as well.

What is a root canal?

When the tooth's blood vessels and nerves have been irreversibly damaged, the resulting pain can be excruciating.  In order to relieve the discomfort, the nerve is removed and the space is filled to protect what is left of the tooth. Cleaning the infection from the tooth’s tiny canals is what gives the procedure the name ‘root canal’.

Do I need a root canal?

After your consultation with Dr. Jeff Bartley, you’ll know if a root canal will solve the problems of:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Build up of gases in the tooth
  • Tooth discomfort overall

How is a root canal procedure performed?

The root canal procedure today, unlike those of the past, is fairly fast and virtually painless. It includes:

  1. Drilling a hole in the tooth to access the damaged nerve
  2. If signs of infection are present, Dr. Bartley will clear it away
  3. The offending nerve and blood supply are removed
  4. The empty chamber is reshaped
  5. The resulting debris is removed
  6. The space is filled with special materials and sealed

Is there pain following the procedure?

A root canal procedure is usually a big relief for the patient, who has been suffering painful symptoms of an infected tooth. Since the cause of the pain is removed, there should be a noticeable improvement right away.

Why continue to suffer with a ‘toothache’? In fact, that toothache may be a sign of a more serious problem. Please contact us immediately for a consultation, and let Dr. Bartley put your fears to rest and a smile back on your face.
