Sleep Apnea
Anchor Point, serving Homer and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous medical condition in which the sufferer may stop breathing for several seconds at a time due to partially blocked airway. If these episodes occur more than 30 times each night, the sufferer is diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.
Most sufferers are totally oblivious to their sleep apnea. After all, they are sleeping and not aware of what is happening to them. But their sleeping partner is probably aware, and has noticed the deep snoring, the cessation of breathing for extended time, and the choking sounds that often follow when the sufferer begins breathing again, causing a highly disruptive sleep environment and a serious health risk for the affected person.
What’s the Risk?It is estimated that 12 million American adults have obstructive sleep apnea. It is about twice as common in men as in women. Individual risk factors also play a part in increasing one’s risk of developing sleep apnea. These factors are:
- Snoring
- Being overweight
- High blood pressure
- Abnormalities such as a deviated septum or abnormally small airway
- Neck size of 17” or larger
- Family history of sleep apnea

While snoring is not necessarily harmful, the episodes of interrupted breathing which characterize sleep apnea can lead to severe risks, including:
- Greater incidence of heart attack
- Higher risk of stroke
- Higher blood pressure
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Choking and gasping during sleep
- Impaired ability to concentrate
- Depression
- Learning and memory problems
- Higher risk of automobile and work-related accidents
