TMD Treatment
Anchor Point, serving Homer and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Because the causes and symptoms of TMD can be different for each individual, diagnosing the disorder can be baffling. Currently, there is no standardized test to definitively diagnose TMD. However, about 90% of all cases can be determined based on symptoms, physical examination of the jaw and face, and the doctor’s skill and experience in treating TMD.
Stopping the Pain with Proper Treatment
The goal of TMD treatment is to:
- Alleviate your pain
- Increase your comfort
- Manage your TMD long-term
Of course, the symptoms of TMD do not occur overnight. So TMD treatment, while very effective, takes some time to fully correct your symptoms. In the meantime, there are a number of things Dr. Bartley may recommend to help you:
- Gentle stretching and stress-reducing exercises for the jaw
- Mouth protectors to stop teeth clenching and grinding
- Medications such as muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs
- Avoiding poor posture, such as holding a phone between your ear and shoulder
Sophisticated Tools
Additionally, Dr. Bartley uses the most sophisticated measurement tools to determine the extent of your malocclusion and to map the optimal position for your jaw. Generally speaking, an orthotic is designed and worn for several months. Orthotics help to stabilize the jaw and maintain the new, more comfortable position. For some patients, crowns, porcelain onlays and porcelain veneers are included as part of the overall treatment. The MyoMonitor ultra low frequency TENS unit may be used to deliver a mild electrical impulse to the muscles for relaxation, increased blood flow, and to encourage muscles to return to their most comfortable length and position.
