TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)

TMDAnchor Point, serving Homer and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

What is TMD?

TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is chronic or acute inflammation of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) that connects the lower jaw to the skull. Misalignment of any of the components surrounding this joint, including the muscles, nerves, connective tissue and teeth, may result in a surprising number of symptoms that, to the untrained eye, may not seem to be linked.

TMD may cause mild irritation at first, but can become a chronic problem leaving patients in considerable pain.

The TMJ is made up of bone and cartilage, and is rather unique in relation to many joints as it must rotate and slide. This dual function is naturally susceptible to wear and tear, and any strain put on it due to malocclusion (misalignment between the upper and lower teeth), poorly fitting braces, crowns or bridges, can cause TMD symptoms.

TMD Treatment

Due to rapidly advancing technology in the area of neuromuscular dentistry, even patients who have suffered the effects of TMD since childhood may find that TMD treatment can offer them a new lease of life, free from the aches and pains associated with this disorder.

Typical causes of TMD include:

  • Changes to the natural shape or positional of teeth
  • Speech habits which involve jaw thrusting.
  • Excessive gum chewing or nail biting.
  • Unnatural or excessive jaw movements associated with exercise.
  • Grinding of teeth (bruxism)
  • Trauma to the teeth
