Can my teeth be whitened?

Although healthy teeth with no fillings get the very best tooth whitening results, almost anyone can benefit from the procedure to remove the stains and discolorations that occur over time due to lifestyle, smoking, aging, heredity and some medications.

How should I whiten my teeth?

Depending on the level of whitening desired, several options exist:

  1. Whitening toothpaste
  2. Whitening strips
  3. At-home whitening kits
  4. Professional dental whitening

Whitening toothpastes and strips offer limited whitening that last a short time. If you have a big event to attend, this may be a short-term option. For long-term whiteness that really dazzles, however, professional whitening is your best bet.

What is the difference between over-the-counter treatments and professional whitening?

Whitening toothpastes generally have an abrasive to help remove discoloration and stains, but the whitening results overall are minor and temporary. Whitening strips only offer a slightly greater degree of success. Professional in-office whitening can improve tooth appearance by as much as 8 shades of whiteness, for a brighter smile that will get you noticed.
